<p style="margin-top: 1em; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 0px; font-size: 1em;">Une grande partie de ma mission de décembre a été consacrée au suivi de la mise en page du fasc. 2 du <em>Catalogue cumulé des bibliothèques de manuscrits de Zabid</em>, I, <em>Bibliothèque &#8216;Abd al-Rahman al-Hadhrami</em>, faite par Hazim al-&#8217;Areqi. Puis à la correction des épreuves. Voici le coeur de la mise en page, dans les locaux du QG de Print&#8217;Art.</p>
<p style="margin-top: 1em; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 0px; font-size: 1em;">The greater part of my mission in December was devoted to overseeing the page-layout of part 2 of the <em>Catalogue cumulé des bibliothèques de manuscrits de Zabid</em>, I, <em>Bibliothèque &#8216;Abd al-Rahman al-Hadhrami</em>, made by Hazim al-&#8217;Areqi. Following this, there were proofs to be corrected. Here is the heart of the page-layout operation at the headquarters of Print Art.</p>

<p style="margin-top: 1em; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 0px; font-size: 1em;">En décembre 2008, Sulayman al-Ahdal est venu de Zabid suivre une formation au logiciel Adobe InDesign, appliqué strictement à la mise en page du Catalogue cumulé des bibliothèques de manuscrits de Zabid. Cédric Béal, basé à Paris et dont le cv dans l&#8217;édition est impressionnant, était le formateur. J&#8217;ai choisi Sulayman pour assurer cette tâche indispensable à l&#8217;autonomie de l&#8217;équipe Zabid, car il vient d&#8217;obtenir son diplôme de l&#8217;Université d&#8217;al-Hudayda, une université reconnu pour sa qualité dans ce domaine, au Yémen. A raison de 4h30 par jour pendant 8 jours, Sulayman s&#8217;est montré un étudiant brillant et assidu, l&#8217;après-midi étant consacré à la révision des connaissances du jour. En milieu de journée, je venais vérifier en arabe l&#8217;assimilation de l&#8217;apprentissage. La dernière matinée a été consacré à un tour d&#8217;horizon pour mémorisation des acquis. Après cet immense effort, nous avons décidé de partir en ballade à Wadi Dhahr, situé à une quinzaine de kms de Sanaa. C&#8217;était une première, non seulement pour Cédric, bien sûr, mais aussi pour Sulayman, qui n&#8217;était entré dans la capitale de son pays qu&#8217;une fois dans sa vie.</p>
<p style="margin-top: 1em; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 0px; font-size: 1em;">In December 2008 Sulayman al-Ahdal came from Zabid to follow a course of training in Adobe InDesign which was specifically designed to assist him in the preparation of the Cumulative Catalogue of the Manuscripts of the Libraries of Zabid. The trainer was Cédric Béal, who is based in Paris and has a very impressive CV in publishing and printing. I chose Sulayman to develop his skills, which are indespensible to the autonomy of the team in Zabid, because he obtained his diploma from the University of al-Hudayda in Yemen: one which is hgihly respected for its excellence in this area. In the course of each day I was able to confirm, in Arabic, the successful assimilation of the training by Sulayman. The last morning of the course was devoted to reviewing the week&#8217;s work. After this immense effort, we dicided to make make a trip to Wadi Dhahr, situated about fifteen kilometers from Sanaa. This was a first visit not only for Cédric, of course, but also for Sulayman who had only once in his life visited the capital of his country.</p>

<p style="margin-top: 1em; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 0px; font-size: 1em;">En juillet 2008, André Le Prat, responsable de l&#8217;Atelier de restauration du musée du Louvre, Dépt des arts graphiques, s&#8217;est rendu à Zabid pour une mission d&#8217;évaluation financée par le Dépt des arts de l&#8217;Islam. Il s&#8217;agissait en un premier temps d&#8217;évaluer les besoins en matière de conservation des manuscrits dans les bibliothèques privées de la ville, puis, en un second temps, d&#8217;étudier la constitution d&#8217;un atelier de restauration dans le Centre des manuscrits de Zabid. Le mois de juillet donne une idée de la température ambiante. S&#8217;agissant de bibliothèques privées, on notera que modes locaux de conservation, type d&#8217;architecture de la Tihâma et vie sociale s&#8217;interpénètrent.</p>

<h4>Evaluation Mission concerning the conservation of the manuscripts of the private libraries of Zabid</h4>
<p style="margin-top: 1em; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 0px; font-size: 1em;">In July 2008, André Le Prat, manager of the Restoration Workshop of the Department of Graphic Arts at the Louvre visited Zabid on a mission of evaluation funded by the Dept of the Arts of Islam. It aimed firstly to establish the requirements for the conservation of manuscripts in private libraries of the city, and secondly to investigate the establishment of a workshop for the conservation of manuscripts within the Zabid Manuscript Centre. The temperature was what one might expect in July. We observed how, in the case of the private libraries, local conservation methods, the architecture of Tihama, and social life were intermingled.</p>

<p>Introduction</p>
<p>Les efforts de reconstruction des débuts de l’histoire de l’Islam, déployés dès la fin du XIXe s., ont conduit à poser le problème de la valeur documentaire de corpus comme le hadith. A l’extrême, l’utilité même de ce travail de reconstitution à partir du seul matériel en langue arabe, a été remise en cause surtout à partir des années 70 par un courant hyper critique, défini parfois comme «  sceptique  », du fait de sa tendance au doute hyperbolique à l’égard de ce matériel.</p>
<p>Aujourd’hui, la situation semble cependant moins désespérée, le manque de documents, au sens de témoins ou contemporains des événements, moins cruel, et ce, pour les siècles habituellement incriminés, du début de l’Islam au début du XVIe s. Tout d’abord la position hyper critique a été elle-même critiquée dans les années 90 ; de nouvelles lectures des textes ou de nouvelles méthodes ont permis de reprendre la reconstitution de l’histoire de l’Islam à ses débuts. Surtout, le mouvement relativement récent autour de la papyrologie arabe a contribué à mettre à jour de nombreux documents sur papyrus ou sur papier, dormant dans des fonds occidentaux, et à s’intéresser à ceux conservés dans des bibliothèques, en Orient. Alors que les périodes précédant la conquête ottomane faisaient figure de parent indigent du fait de la pauvreté, voire de l’inexistence des fonds d’archives les concernant, elles paraissent aujourd’hui pouvoir offrir de nouvelles perspectives, d’autant que certains fonds connus sont inexploités et que d’autres restent à redé- couvrir et ce, même si fonds documentaire ne signifie pas archives. De nouveaux chantiers de fouilles et prospections ont aussi apporté leur lot de découvertes (graffitis omayyades et ayyoubides, papiers de Fustat, de Quseir, etc.).</p>
<p>C’est cette «  nouvelle frontière  », appliquée à des documents variés, que l’on se propose d’explorer, sur une aire géographique s’étendant du Maghreb à l’Iran.</p>
<p>« Documents et histoire » constitue le thème de ces journées d’étude. Elles se donnent pour mission d’illustrer les tendances récentes des travaux sur les sources documentaires, pour la période envisagée, dans le courant des années 90 et 2000. Il est dans leur dynamique d’inviter à une méta-réflexion sur ces sources, ainsi qu’à toute observation épistémologique.</p>
<p>Introduction</p>
<p>Efforts were conducted as early as the end of the 19th century, with the aim of reconstructing the history of early Islam. They were soon to face the question of how much some corpus, as the hadith, were to be trusted as a source. Some of the scholars in this field, especially during the seventies, came to question even the use of this material and prefered to work on sources in other languages. Their position has been sometimes described as &#8220;skeptical&#8221; since they voiced hyperbolic doubts with regard to this material.</p>
<p>Today, the situation seems less critical. The lack of documents which were contemporary with the events is less acute, even for the period which is usually considered as poorly documented, i.e. from the beginning of Islam until the begin- ning of the 16 th century AD. In first place, the skeptical position has been itself under critic during the eighties. New readings of the texts or new methods led to fresh attempts at understanding the history of the early Islam. Arabic papyrology has recently witnessed new efforts leading to the discovery of numerous documents on papyrus or paper, either in Western libraries or in Near Eastern collections. Although the period before Ottoman rule was considered as especially poor as far as archival material is concerned, new perspectives seem to have been recently opened. We are expecting a lot from well known but underexploited collections as well as from collections which are still to be discovered, from archives as well as from other kinds of documents. New excavations and surveys brought new discoveries (Umayyad and Ayyoubid inscriptions, documents from Fustat, Quseir, etc.).</p>
<p>It is the aim of the workshop to explore this &#8220;New Frontier&#8221; over an area extending from Iran to the Maghrib and through various types of documents.</p>
<p>&#8220;Documents and history&#8221; is the theme for this workshop. The aim is to illustrate the recent trends in research on documents during the period extending from the early nineties up to this day. They are a place where thinking about the sources and epistemological remarks are expected.</p>

<p style="margin-top: 1em; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 0px; font-size: 1em; text-align: left;">Avec la création d&#8217;un Markaz al-Makhtutat ou Centre pour les manuscrits et d&#8217;une association privée de sauvegarde des manuscrits, Zabid se dote de deux pièces majeures dans le dispositif visant à assurer la fixation du patrimoine manuscrit de Zabid à Zabid et, plus largement celui de la Tihama. Appelée depuis longtemps de nos voeux, au sein du Programme de sauvegarde des manuscrits de bibliothèques privées de Zabid (CEFAS), sa réalisation représente une victoire de taille : à la condition qu&#8217;elle puisse être dotée d&#8217;un budget, les manuscrits pourront être conservés sur place, dans des conditions meilleures et leur regroupement au sein d&#8217;un même lieu rendra possible une politique de restauration. Un atelier est d&#8217;ailleurs prévu à cet effet, au premier étage.</p>
<p style="margin-top: 1em; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 0px; font-size: 1em; text-align: left;">With the establishment of a Markaz al-Makhtutat (centre for manuscripts) and a private association for safeguarding manuscripts, Zabid has provided itself with two of the major elements necessary to assure the preservation of Zabid&#8217;s manuscript heritage in Zabid and, more widely, that of the whole Tihama area. Its establishment has, for a long time, been a principal ambition of the Programme to Safeguard the Manuscripts of the Private Libraries of Zabid (CEFAS) and its realisation represents an important victory. Subject to the provision of a budget, it will be possible to keep the manuscripts in Zabid in the best conditions and collected together in one building with a restoration policy. A workshop for restoration is planned for the first floor.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Anne Regourd s&#8217;est rendu en mission à Shibam, de la fin mars au début avril 2008, à la demande du GOPHSY/Shibam. Cette mission a été financée par l&#8217;Ambassade du Yémen à Paris. L&#8217;objet de la mission consistait à faire une évaluation afin d&#8217;assurer la sauvegarde d&#8217;une 40aine de manuscrits, actuellement conservés par le GOPHSY, à Shibam. Le texte du projet a été remis à l&#8217;Ambassadeur du Yémen à Paris, son Excellence Amir al-&#8217;Aydarus, courant avril. Un projet de fabrication d&#8217;armoires-coffres pour conserver les manuscrits, à Shibam et environs, a été remis par ailleurs au GTZ, en mai.</p>

<p>Anne Regourd undertook a mission to Shibam at the end of March and beginning of April 2008 at the request of GOPHSY/Shibam. The mission was financed by the Embassy of Yemen at Paris. The mission&#8217;s object was to make an evaluation, with a view to assuring their safeguarding, of about forty manuscripts presently conserved by or in the care of GOPHSY at Shibam. &#8230;</p>
