The University of Ann Arbor, where I am invited to give a talk as a guest lecturer, in an Undergraduate  Seminar,  “Evidence of International medieval trade, Mediterranean/Indian Ocean: Archaeological finds at Quseir”

Abstract

Quseir was a trading town in Egypt on the Red Sea coast. Archaeological finds indicate intense trading activity during the late Ayyubid period (1200-1240). Among these finds are documents, mainly written on paper or inscribed textiles, that show that Quseir participated in the great trade that joined the Mediterranean region to India, through Fustat (Old Cairo) and the Yemen. This seminar will focus on these documents, shedding light on the methodology used by a papyrologist who is the first to date and classify documents. As the documents are archaeological finds, papyrologists can use a range of clues to date them, which are not available when dealing with archival contexts.

“Jinns, images of jinns, and magical medicine in contemporary Yemen”

Abstract

Magical medicine is used in some traditional parts of the Islamic world to confront three principal causes of diseases: the evil eye, sorcery, and jinns (genies). Different types of objects provide evidence for various kinds of magical therapy, but very few survive that appear to be used to treat the effects of sorcery. Images of jinns are also highly unusual. However, in a manuscript found in Yemen, representations of kings of various tribes of the jinn are more than mere illustrations. They represent part of magical texts that are used for the purpose of chasing away jinns in cases where individuals are thought to be possessed by them.

Ce sont les derniers achats au souk de Sanaa pour Cédric, un fanat des tapis… Impossible de quitter Bab al-Yémen sans essayer ce pèse-personne automatique qui donne votre poids à la cantonade et vous gratifie d’un ticket sous l’oeil vigilant de son propriétaire. Puis, c’est le dernier dîner, dans un restaurant indien avec Ursula Dreibholz, avant le départ pour l’aeroport.

Cedric, who’s keen on carpets, makes some last-minutes bargains in the souk. Impossible to leave Yemen without trying the weighing machine which, under the proud supervision of its proprietor, not only sings out your weight, but issues permanent proof as a printed ticket. Then it’s time for the last dinner, in and Indian restaurant with Ursula Dreibholz, before leaving for the airport.

Print Art: the Design Department

Une grande partie de ma mission de décembre a été consacrée au suivi de la mise en page du fasc. 2 du Catalogue cumulé des bibliothèques de manuscrits de Zabid, I, Bibliothèque ‘Abd al-Rahman al-Hadhrami, faite par Hazim al-’Areqi. Puis à la correction des épreuves. Voici le coeur de la mise en page, dans les locaux du QG de Print’Art.

The greater part of my mission in December was devoted to overseeing the page-layout of part 2 of the Catalogue cumulé des bibliothèques de manuscrits de Zabid, I, Bibliothèque ‘Abd al-Rahman al-Hadhrami, made by Hazim al-’Areqi. Following this, there were proofs to be corrected. Here is the heart of the page-layout operation at the headquarters of Print Art.

InDesign Training, Cédric Béal / Sulayman al-Ahdal

En décembre 2008, Sulayman al-Ahdal est venu de Zabid suivre une formation au logiciel Adobe InDesign, appliqué strictement à la mise en page du Catalogue cumulé des bibliothèques de manuscrits de Zabid. Cédric Béal, basé à Paris et dont le cv dans l’édition est impressionnant, était le formateur. J’ai choisi Sulayman pour assurer cette tâche indispensable à l’autonomie de l’équipe Zabid, car il vient d’obtenir son diplôme de l’Université d’al-Hudayda, une université reconnu pour sa qualité dans ce domaine, au Yémen. A raison de 4h30 par jour pendant 8 jours, Sulayman s’est montré un étudiant brillant et assidu, l’après-midi étant consacré à la révision des connaissances du jour. En milieu de journée, je venais vérifier en arabe l’assimilation de l’apprentissage. La dernière matinée a été consacré à un tour d’horizon pour mémorisation des acquis. Après cet immense effort, nous avons décidé de partir en ballade à Wadi Dhahr, situé à une quinzaine de kms de Sanaa. C’était une première, non seulement pour Cédric, bien sûr, mais aussi pour Sulayman, qui n’était entré dans la capitale de son pays qu’une fois dans sa vie.

In December 2008 Sulayman al-Ahdal came from Zabid to follow a course of training in Adobe InDesign which was specifically designed to assist him in the preparation of the Cumulative Catalogue of the Manuscripts of the Libraries of Zabid. The trainer was Cédric Béal, who is based in Paris and has a very impressive CV in publishing and printing. I chose Sulayman to develop his skills, which are indespensible to the autonomy of the team in Zabid, because he obtained his diploma from the University of al-Hudayda in Yemen: one which is hgihly respected for its excellence in this area. In the course of each day I was able to confirm, in Arabic, the successful assimilation of the training by Sulayman. The last morning of the course was devoted to reviewing the week’s work. After this immense effort, we dicided to make make a trip to Wadi Dhahr, situated about fifteen kilometers from Sanaa. This was a first visit not only for Cédric, of course, but also for Sulayman who had only once in his life visited the capital of his country.

At CEFAS the Catalogue cumulé des manuscrits de bibliothèques privées de Zabid joins the display of publications.

Mission d’évaluation pour la conservation des manuscrits de bibliothèques privées, Zabid

En juillet 2008, André Le Prat, responsable de l’Atelier de restauration du musée du Louvre, Dépt des arts graphiques, s’est rendu à Zabid pour une mission d’évaluation financée par le Dépt des arts de l’Islam. Il s’agissait en un premier temps d’évaluer les besoins en matière de conservation des manuscrits dans les bibliothèques privées de la ville, puis, en un second temps, d’étudier la constitution d’un atelier de restauration dans le Centre des manuscrits de Zabid. Le mois de juillet donne une idée de la température ambiante. S’agissant de bibliothèques privées, on notera que modes locaux de conservation, type d’architecture de la Tihâma et vie sociale s’interpénètrent.

Evaluation Mission concerning the conservation of the manuscripts of the private libraries of Zabid

In July 2008, André Le Prat, manager of the Restoration Workshop of the Department of Graphic Arts at the Louvre visited Zabid on a mission of evaluation funded by the Dept of the Arts of Islam. It aimed firstly to establish the requirements for the conservation of manuscripts in private libraries of the city, and secondly to investigate the establishment of a workshop for the conservation of manuscripts within the Zabid Manuscript Centre. The temperature was what one might expect in July. We observed how, in the case of the private libraries, local conservation methods, the architecture of Tihama, and social life were intermingled.
